Camp Harmony [NOT!] Literature Focus :]

Question:
Interpret: how would you define the mood of the people on the bus at the beginning of the journey the camp harmony and at the end of the journey?

Answer:
When the people were on the bus to go to Camp Harmony, they all felt excited and tried to be as positive as they can. The group of college students were singing and at least they were trying to be positive.  The group of college student probably was the most exciting group, "Everyone was quiet except for a chattering group of university students who soon started singing college songs." page 515. With the tone of the description of what the author was seeing while she was sitting on the bus, we can tell that she's describing things beautifully with her innocent and positive soul.

But when they got to the camp and assigned their department, they started to feel uncertain about the harsh life conditions they're going to have as long as they remain living in that Camp Harmony. At first the family of Monica was trying to be as positive as they could, the mother found an inspiration for her poem. But the main character changed from a positive girl into a girl with fear, confusion because of the treatment that she’s getting from the U.S.A government. She considered herself as a native-born American and she probably has been acting as a true American but now she's blamed for her real nationality. And she felt loss of her identity because since now the americans are considering her as a Japanese but she knows very little about being a Japanese so she doesn't know how to act and how to become a "real japanese". She  has little or no privacy. Everything is under control of the government [the director of camp]. In the book, Monica said, "Maybe I wasn't considered an American anymore. My citizenship wasn't real, after all. Then what was I? I was certainly not a citizen of Japan as my parents were." Page 520.

Economy Essay ♥

MARKET ECONOMY
There should be the freedom to gain
The freedom to give
The freedom to have greed
and the freedom to grow
                        -Justine Truong
This world has four different common types of economy: Command, Mixed, Traditional, and Market. But by comparing and contrast the benefit and the trust of many nations, a market economy deserves to be considering as the best type of economy. It positively affects the citizens by helping the country to develop and allows citizens to enrich themselves through their knowledge and effort.

A market economy helps people to enrich themselves. In How much land does a man need, there is a sentence in the story that says “He was ten times better off than he had been.” The sentence talks about a man named Pahom and his growth of wealth due to the freedom of farming crops as much as he is able to and sell them in his own price.  Pahom got the opportunities and freedom to get the wealth in a short amount of time. He was smart and he made good effort on trying to get rich to fulfill his greed. He got the knowledge of where is the land that is common to his community and he grabbed his chance to get that land. For example, he heard the rumor of the Bashkir and their fertile land therefore he made a visit to the Bashkir and made a deal with them to get his desired land. It benefits not only Pahom, but also the majority of those whom apply market economy to their country. It benefits the citizen because if all the population of a nation gets wealthier, the country will become stronger and more stable which leads to the next reason why a market economy should be considering as the best type of economy.

A market economy not only allows citizens to enhance income, but also helps the country to develop and grow. An excellent example is the U.S.  In the U.S, people are free to do anything. The people in America have their freedom to make choices and own anything they are able to purchase. The resources are own by individuals, not the government, so there is a lots of competition. But in a market economy, in order to reach to the top and step on the competition, you have to fight for your position in the market. Citizens will keep on fighting and trying their best to reach their goals, which means all the creations and the ideas are leveling up every time a business man or woman stepped up. It helps the nation to grow and to become a technologically advanced nation. The U.S applied market economy which helped its GDP, Gross Domestic Product – total amount of money a nation made in a year, to increase.

It started off with a very low GDP, only more than 1000 USD, but right now, it is more than ten times better off. In the book World Culture and Geography, it says, “The U.S economy produces goods and services worth more than the output of any other country”. The book verified that because of the help of market economy, the U.S improved its items quality and become one of the richest nations in the world. The U.S benefits from having freedom to make economic choices that helps them to upgrade their economy.

Overall, a market economy brings positive effects to the citizens such as encouraging and pushing them to get wealthy in a short amount of time and helps the country to develop. Many countries in the entire world supported it, such as Brazil, Japan, USA, Sweden, Columbia, Sudan, etc… and all benefited from using it. A market economy gives its nations the ability to grow rich and wealthy base on their own effort which leads them to lead healthier and happier lives. Even though the greed of businessmen challenged the idea of this type of economy but that is nothing comparing to how well market economies benefits its citizens. It is clear that market economies are al important part of life for all.

Gentleman of Rio en Medio - Make Judgements

The narrator is familiar to the culture and way of living of the Americans. He doesn't understand the duty and honor of Don Anselmo which caused them to have conflict because of different living ways and believing in different ideas. To Don Anselmo, he respects the properties of other people so he decided not to touch it when he sold the land. To me, Don Anselmo is right because those trees don't belong to him so he doesn't have the right to do anything with them. Just because you HAVE it doesn't mean that it's YOURS. And also, I don't know what's in the contract Don Anselmo's signed but I believe there's no such thing as "When the American bought the land, everything that is in the land is theirs". Overall, Don Anselmo is the right guy.

Stop the Sun Literature Focus - Make Judgements

I think that it was a good idea to ask Terry's father about his illness. Yes it was very hurtful to the father but it gave Terry the knowledge of his father's illness and it helps Terry to understand what his father has been through so that he can fix his behaviors. And maybe, since Terry already knew the cause of the illness, he might know what he could do to encourage or cheer his father up. To me, it's a good thing.

Final Draft for my Narrative Essay

Jellyfish

“DARLING COME! THE WATER DOESN’T KNOW HOW TO BITE!” my mom was calling me while she was jumping down to the sea.

The sun was shining but it wasn’t too shiny. The cloud chilled down the sun. The wind was blowing gently along people’s shoulders. I felt like I was lying down on a hammock that was hanging on two coconut trees on the beach. Oh wait, I was at a beach. I was afraid though. My mom and her friends were splashing water at each other. I was still standing on the bridge. I couldn’t jump down. I had lots of reasons for my fear of jumping down though. First, I afraid I might hit something sharp. Second, I wouldn’t like it if a crab got me. Third, I didn’t know how to swim that well.

“Hey! What are you waitin’ for? COME DOWN HERE LITTLE PRINCESSA!” my mom’s friend called me with all those hand gestures.

“Are there any crab?” I asked with my silly voice.

“NO! Of course not! COME!” my mom yelled back.

“OKAY! I WOULD GIVE IT A TRY!” I replied back.

I didn’t know where I got the gut and how I did it but I jumped down the bridge and it felt good. It felt like I was getting out from all the depressions.

I swam a lot. I didn’t do much of swimming since 3rd grade because of all the homework and piano lessons. I swam all the way from the bridge to the other one which is around 100 meters far. I did all style of swimming. I didn’t pay any attention on the water and the place that I was swimming to.

“OUCHIE! MOMMY! SOMETHING BIT ME” I yelled in pain.

“What?” My mom asked me back in with curiosity.

“Something with tons of those long strings that wrapped up my legs!” I cried in pain

“Oh that’s a jelly fish! We didn’t know that this sea has jelly fishes.” My mom’s friend said out loud.

“Come here darling. I’ll bring you back to the hotel.” My mom came closer to me and then carried me back to the hotel.

I cried all the way from the beach to the hotel room. I can’t stop crying. It’s like hundred of stitches that were trying to go through my skin. If a 2 years old kid got sting a jellyfish, he or she might faint because it’s unbelievably painful. It left a scar. But it got fade away 2 months later.

Instead of having fun and do all those camp fire things with my mom’s friend, I had to sit alone in the hotel room watching those Tom & Jerry Shows because I can’t actually moved my legs. I felt terrible for not paying attention while I was under the water. I should have been more careful.

Temptation and the desire of having fun dragged me away from my caution. Since that day, I learned about how things can drag me out of my caution and leading me to terrible consequences. So I became more of a cautious girl the next day and still until now.

The next time I had to go to that beach again, I did a little research on how to avoid jellyfish and ideas of going to a safe place to swim. Oh and guess what? The jellyfish that stung me was just a normal one. Not the poisonous one. How lucky am I?

Flower for Algernon

My choice is no.6: Interpret

-I think what they meant by saying "to pull a Charlie Gordon" is like "being stupid and dump like Charlie".

In the story, Charlie Gordon is facing a mental problem and having a lower than normal IQ. He has been chosen to take a medical experiment to get himself triple time smarter.

So as the operation's result working slowly on Charlie, he realized that his friends have been playing dirty tricks on him and make him looks like a fool in front of everyone.

To people, Charlie's a pretty "not smart" guy.

So when anyone act dump or stupid or reckless, they compare those people to Charlie.

And that's why they use the sentence "to pull a Charlie Gordon".
